Diabetic neuropathy is the damage caused to nerves as a result of diabetes. High blood sugar can damage nerve fibres throughout your body. The signs and symptoms of diabetic neuropathy can range from mild to severe. Diabetic neuropathy occurs at an aggravated stage of diabetes.

There are different types of diabetic neuropathy and symptoms depend on the type of neuropathy affected. Some persons with diabetic neuropathy shows no symptoms and some other patients show symptoms such as numbness, tingling or pain in the feet and digestive system.

Signs of diabetic neuropathy can involve the sensory, motor and autonomic nervous systems. In some individuals, mostly with those focal neuropathy, the onset of pain may be sudden.

 Common symptoms of nerve damage:

  • Pain in the legs, feet or arms
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Erectile dysfunction in men or vaginal dryness in women
  • Urinary bladder problems
  • Weakness

In order to prevent diabetic neuropathy or slow down its progress it is necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle with tight blood sugar control.

Ayurveda regards diabetic neuropathy to be the result of improper functioning of all three functional elements, though, the role played by fire element in the occurrence of the disease is more pronounced. Eating too much sugar, fat, refined carbohydrates, over tension, worry and anxiety play prominent role in causing this imbalance.
