Eczema is a condition of skin where the skin tends to become red, itchy and inflamed. The term Eczema and Dermatitis can be used synonymously. Acute Eczema is a disease where skin rashes occur with redness, slight swelling, terrible itching, ill-defined margins, exudation/ oozing, cracking and skin flaking. In chronic cases, skin becomes thickened, leathery, and dry with fissure and scratch marks. This type of problem is very common and in most cases it can be manageable if treated properly. It’s most seen in children and infants and also in adults.
In Ayurveda, it is known as Vicharchika. Acute eczema is kapha dominant condition with lot of itching and oozing. Chronic Eczema becomes Vata dominant with presence of fissures, cracks and dryness.

The cause for Eczema are many that are mostly related to our day today living and eating habits. Contact Eczema happens with irritants like detergents, alkalies, acids, metals etc. Atopic Eczema is because of impaired immunity and genetic predisposition. Too much consumption of foods that are too spicy, salty, oily , heavy or sour can lead to eczema. Too much consumption of Urad dal and Curd is also very important causative factor for eczema.Working late night, frequent late night dinners, too much of physical, mental, and sexual happenings, exercising after consuming meals and also stress can be the leading factors for causing eczema because of Vata aggravation. There is no such specific cause for this skin problem but in most cases it could be a combination of many above causes that lead to imbalance of Doshas.
