Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that causes itchy or sore patches of thick, red skin with silvery scales. According to Ayurveda impurities in the blood associated with the emotional factors are the causes of psoriasis. It can be considered as the vitiation of vata and kapha.
The disease usually affects your elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet. Some people only suffer minor localized patches, while others are affected all over the body. A minor section of people who are affected psoriasis will also develop joint pain ( psoriatic arthritis), which may involve one or more joints.
Psoriasis often first appear in the late teens and in the 50’s. The disease affects men and women equally, although in children, girls are more likely to be diagnosed with psoriasis than girls.
Psoriasis develops when the immune system overreacts, causing swelling and flaking of skin. Alcohol consumption, smoking, mental tension and withdrawal of systemic corticosteroid are the factors that may aggravate psoriasis. The disease also tends to run in families.
People with psoriasis often observe times when their skin gets worse. The factors that can cause these flare-ups include a cold and dry climate, infections, stress, dry skin and taking certain machines.
Diagnosing psoriasis are very much a hard a task because it can look like all other skin diseases. The physician might need to look at a sample under a microscope.
